GPOYW: Day Late (and not me) Edition
Acclaimed author Beatrice (Culleton) Mosionier is launching her new book tomorrow night at Aqua. Come Walk With Me is the memoir of the life of the author of the classic, In Search of April Raintree. Also there will be David Robertson, launching The Life of Helen Betty Osborne: The Graphic Novel, on the 38th anniversary of the murder of Betty (November 13, 1971). Here’s a nice profile on Beatrice in Uptown.

GPOYW: My First (Abortive) Career Edition
This is me in 1991, after I’d landed in Vancouver to be a big film star (note the pre-Photo Shop era zit). In spite of the Michael Landon look, I eventually landed a nice school tour. The next year I came home and began my on-the-job training in business. (I’m back on stage again these days, in Kelly Hughes Live!.)

GPOYW: Kelly Hughes Live! from 9/4/09
nameles:
Bookstore Owner Kelly Hughes’ first guest was local writer Michael Van Rooy. What followed was a very funny interview that centered mostly around cheese making inside Stony Mountain Penitentiary (little known fact that Van Rooy spent 8 months as a guest at Stony… I probably shouldn’t be telling anyone this but since no one reads my blog, it doesn’t really matter).

GPOYW: Mid-Life Crisis Edition
I just found an old VHS from 1991. That’s Bookstore Owner Kelly Hughes back when I was Actor Kelly Grant Hughes, taking a break from performing in Pacific Theatre’s school tour of St. Sam and the Dragon, somewhere in BC. I was 175 lbs. and had all my hair. *sigh*

GPOYW: This Isn’t Me Edition
(This is a picture of poet Colin Smith, who hangs out here at Aqua and will be really mad when he sees that I’ve put him online. Also, he’s kind of craggy [one of his poems contains the line “my body is the colour of old towels”] and doesn’t normally lurk in the flowers, so this is pretty funny.)

GPOYW: The New Hours Sign Edition
People can never figure out our huge hours sign on the right (beautifully designed by Instant Noodles). We’re closed Sundays and Mondays (so we can give our staff two days off in a row), which is confusing for people. On Sunday, I try to keep my marriage from falling apart. On Monday, I work on things that can’t get done when we’re open. As I sit here, people try the door. When it doesn’t open, they pull harder. They look in the window. They step back and look confused. Sometimes they even call the phone number here from their cel phones. Only one in three actually looks at the hours. So we bought a nice new illuminated sign (pictured at left). I was hoping that would help.
The night we put it up, a woman came by at 8:30pm, half-opened the door, stopped, looked at the new sign, and then left. Clearly that was not what I was shooting for, to somehow dissuade people from coming in at all. If you want to go into retail, get a psychology degree first.
